Super Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse September 2015: Sacred Flames and Exploding Stoves
To say that today's full moon (September 27th in the States / 28th in Europe and Asia) will be intense would be a joke…! Several factors make this moon outstanding. It’s a lunar eclipse – a “blood moon”, as the earth’s shadow on the moon colors it red. What’s more, this blood moon happens at a time when the moon is orbiting at its closest point to earth. It will appear almost 15% bigger in the sky than usual, and bring a huge influx of lunar energy. Something like mum checking in at bedtime if we’re being good kids…
The hot side of the moon
On top of it, this Mars-colored moon occurs at 4 degrees of Aries, the sign ruled by the god of war & passion. The beginning of the sign, the first decan of Aries, contains the essence of the ram’s energy, red hot, impulsive, headstrong and passionate – or passionately angry... All full moons are peaks of intensity and release and/or endings. This one however could be so strong that it really catapults us out of our comfort zone. The sky is the limit, for both passion and rage! The influence of this moon extends until next March, so we better fasten our seat belts.
Because the moon and sun are placed on the axis of relating, Aries/Libra, this super moon eclipse promises to throw the spotlight on relationships. Ready or not, anything that’s not sound in this department will not be safe. Especially imbalances of giving and taking will stick out like a sore thumb. A crisis also can bring resolution though. Collectively, we are going through a karmic time for relationships – both personal and professional ones. This is indicated by a very rare phenomenon: The nodes of the moon forming an exact - positive - aspect to Saturn. The nodes represent Karma and past and future, and Saturn is called the Lord of Karma… Aspects to Saturn can solidify or terminate circumstances and relationships for good. The axis of the nodes is in early Aries/Libra, too, close to the axis of the full moon, so whatever comes up during this time – culminations, endings, or healing crises - has the potential to stay in place for a long time. I think we have a window of opportunity to solve some karmic t(ri)angles and move on lighter, having shed the weight of a couple of millennia, lol!
Two very important female celestial bodies ;) are in close orb with the moon and sun, making matters still more complex. Our fiery Aries moon is conjunct Vesta, the sun conjunct Juno. Vesta is an asteroid symbolizing the holy flame… our sacred calling beyond mundane chores or career concerns. In Rome, Vesta’s priestesses were virgins, belonging to no man but tending to the holy fire. During this fiery full moon, there could be an impulse to find and/or tend to our very own holy flame. Vesta in Aries should make this quest even more passionate and courageous! But there’s also the danger of becoming a temple virgin who denies herself the pleasures and happiness of love and sharing and instead soldiers on like a single samurai… beheading every man who dares step into the temple.
…and Perfect Couples
On the other end of the equation there is the sun in Libra conjunct Juno. Sun in Libra conjunct Juno looks like the perfect wife – or husband for that matter, because the sun represents male energy. Let’s keep it open for both sexes... after all, it happens in Libra and is all about balance! Sun conjunct Juno in Libra suggests someone who focuses on being a spouse; on making the partner happy, decorating the home (and themselves), and balancing out any rough spots. We have here the perfect host/ess who can really work their high-end grill, and the super modern oven in the open kitchen – holy flame 2.0…
At first glance then it looks like at this full moon, two very different ways of life will come up against each other, needing balance… Can we pursue our spiritual mission – AND have that barbeque in the garden with friends and family? Seriously though, there could be some feeling of being torn… of standing at a crossroads between your very own, very unique desires and the wish to share and be in a partnership, where making compromises will be neccessary.
Black Moon Lilith
Perhaps the answer is the moon… the dark side of the moon: Lilith. Black Moon Lilith is a point in space, not a body, but she is very real in her influence. She is the point in the moon’s orbit that’s furthest from earth. During the full moon, this point is conjunct the sun. Black Moon Lilith, BML, works like the black sheep, the punk, the rebel, the whore, witch, and everything that patriarchy has tried to sweep under the rug in that perfect suburb.
With Juno and BML in conjunction, think Desperate Housewives… triangular relationships of all kinds, “normal” people Breaking Bad, cooking up some really interesting dishes on those high end stoves. It could also manifest as random sex and cheating with the mailman, the milk maid, the pizza boy, stripper, and all the senior partners… Ok that’s perhaps taking it a bit over the top. In fact, Lilith represents the dark, untamed, raw female power, neither good nor bad for that matter; at least not in those patriarchal, monotheistic categories. It's an energy that has been suppressed for so long that it mostly turns up in its distorted form...
The Face of the Goddess
According to the bible, Lilith was Adam’s first wife, created as his equal, who didn’t agree to the subordinate role assigned to her, and was therefore banished. Actually, she did not want to lay beneath Adam during sex. She was going for her own pleasure, and that was of course unacceptable. If you know how to read mythology, it’s pretty obvious that Lilith is one of the old goddesses who were subjugated and made into demons by the Abrahamic religions. She represents one face of the Great Mother, her rebellious, dark female power. It’s not to be feared, we can learn to embrace it. So there’s the answer to our contradictions… to those artificially assigned roles of Virgin vs. Wife vs. “Whore”. Use your female power to integrate all those facets into an authentic expression of your own individual female self. If you are a man, this power is in you, too, and can heal you. Pluto going direct shortly before the lunation supports that constructive use of power, as well as Saturn’s positive influence.
Strange urges and forbidden cupcakes
For the next six months, you can expect Lilith’s presence can make some primal urges and strange likes, wants and needs stir deep inside of you. In parts that are most often censored by your socially accepted self! You could also meet someone who reflects that back to you. Some outcast, slightly crazy, or very powerful and individualistic person. You could find yourself gravitating to people or places you'd normally not consider suitable. The punk girl next door might bring you some cupcakes for your housewarming and you end up liking her a lot… and you’re a girl too… ups!! You might feel the sudden urge to sell your home in that nice and tidy suburb and seek out some brujas in South America to learn about ayahuasca, to join a sword fighting club, or learn pole dancing. Be aware because these urges contain a message from your real self beyond social conditioning and accepted bucket lists. Just see how you can work this out with your partner... or if you even want to!
Revisions and controlled power
Mercury being retrograde at the time of the lunation suggests that there will be revisions to be made anyway during the next weeks. Mercury is still in Libra and will go direct on October 9th at 0 degrees of the sign, forming a conjunction to the north node, and then move forward again. On October 9th, Venus is also leaving the shadow zone of her recent retrograde, indicating that we can move into new territory in relationships at last. She also forms a last square to Saturn, and will leave the shadow roughly where Mars is during the eclipse. By the way there are still some stressful aspects from Saturn during the next weeks, too, so cope with obstacles and delays in a cool way please. Let’s see the next weeks and months unfold. Keep your holy flame alive, no matter in what shape, form, or size. It may be not what your mom always wanted for you… or your psychologist... Doesn’t matter. As long as it’s reflecting the face of the goddess back to you. Relationships that are real will have to deal with both partner's Lilith and Vesta energy. That fiery moon can warm you or burn you up... Happy bonfire!!
