Blue Bird of Paradise Moon
This July, we have the rare occurrence of a second full moon in the same month – called a “blue moon”. Despite the romantic sound, a blue moon doesn’t really carry more significance than a normal full moon. It’s a result of the solar calendar which overrules the natural lunar 4 week cycle. Let’s see what this one is all about though - perhaps there is some magic after all :)
The lunation occurs on 7 degrees of excentric and electric air sign Aquarius. The moon makes no major aspects – that’s quite rare and puts a special emphasis on the opposition of moon and sun. Relating is put into focus, and it seems that relating to the proud and protective Leo sun is enough to keep our cool & smart Aquarian moon busy. Heart - Mind - Heart – Mind… Commitment? – No, I want my freedom… but I would like some closeness… How can I be myself in relationships… sigh…
I’ve been looking for freedom…
Let’s see how Aquarius and Leo relate. Being set in the first ten degrees of the respective signs, we’re dealing with the fresh, full-on expression of both signs here. So on the one hand, there’s the moon that may seem cool and detached but who really has a heart for all people, especially the outcasts, eccentrics and those who stand up to injustice and the pressure to conform… Aquarius values freedom above all because it guarantees that each person can be themselves, and that’s what Aquarius is all about. It is a sign that likes to provoke, to go against the grain, to think way outside the box. Sometimes it can be coming on too strong with revolutionary ideas and radical concepts and getting a little hard headed about those visions. But still, mostly Aquarius deeply cares about a future for everybody. It just can’t be a future that compromises freedom through routines, hierarchies and customs…
The same goes for relationships. Aquarius is no marriage advocate. Or if they commit themselves, then there has to be freedom and space for each of the two partners. Or, three? Or four... at any rate, there might be a lot of space needed for friends and aquaintances. It can be people who don’t live together with their lover, who have a long distance relationship or who share extraordinary interests. They won’t allow anyone forbid them letting their true colors shine through. Aquarius is the stranger who entertains the party, the expat, the bird of paradise amongst the poultry. How fitting then that the moon is close to fixed Star Alpha Tucana in the Tucan, the eccentric tropical bird.
Big Cats, Clans & Customs
The sun in 7 Leo on the other side of the zodiac has a completely different feel to it. The sun rules Leo, so it’s strong in its home sign here. Leo is solar and about the heart – and also about the lion’s share and the lion’s pride! They can be generous, genuinely warm, romantic and loving. That full-on Leo love surely feels good and makes you feel special, too – it’s not the Aquarian sharing in the spirit of brotherhood of man. Leo’s style of relating is different. They generally are no loners, they live in clans, they are protective and they stick together. Family is family… which means you’re in or your’re out. If you’re in, you’ll have love, privileges and protection, but it can come with a price. In the worst case imagine a Mediterranean wedding… it’s beautiful, it’s romantic, the whole family is there… and before you can spend your wedding night with your newlywed – gorgeous looking and finely dressed – husband, his aunt, first and second cousin are already meddling in your relationship while the uncles quietly take him to the side discussing business… Godfather, anyone? It’s not for nothing that the mafia is known as the “family”. The clan in Godfather has the name Corleone on top of it… the Lion’s heart.
So this moon clearly highlights a need to console two extremes. As if on clue, relationship planet Venus will retrograde back from 0 degrees Virgo into Leo just a few hours after the full moon. Venus has been stationing retrograde on fixed star Regulus. Regulus is one of the four Royal Stars of Persia and known as – the Lion’s heart! We’re all asked to face this full moon with a lot of courage and confront any issues about relating and how much love, protection and freedom we give and want from each other. The retrograde motion of love (and war…) planet Venus signals that there might be some matters of the heart to clear and clean up before we can move on into healthier forms of relating. Can we manage to merge the Aquarian demand for freedom, space and individual unfoldment with Leo’s big hearted love-bombing style that sometimes, though, wants to make their partner conform to their idea of love?
Clarity seems to be needed all the more because due to precession, the sun at 7 Leo is actually situated in the heart of the constellation of the Crab. First decan Leo carries some characteristics of Cancer – the sign connected to our roots, ancestors, the family… clingy and sentimental and very protective of loved ones. Things could get really foggy here as the heart of the crab is home to the oldest star cluster or nebula known to Western astronomy.
Itching to break out
Today it’s known as the beehive cluster, because the stars seem crowded together like a swarm of bees. So regarding relationships and our way of relating and showing love we could all have a “bee in our bonnet”… getting the hives from too much control and itching to break free to our own unique shape, size and form of love. Pay attention, full moons heighten feelings and bring them to a real boil. Don’t start playing dirty because both Aquarius and Leo are fixed signs and any rose war could degenerate into trench warfare… Stay clear of fixed opinions, ultimatums and any form of self-righteousness.
So for any star-crossed couples at the time around the full moon: take your time to look what you have in common in your opposition. Oppositions arise because there is actually a common interest but different means, feelings and opinions connected to the topic. At the full moon it’s the same. Both Aquarius and Leo actually care deeply about human connections (flirting included) and also about self-expression! The best way to unite would probably be a big fat summer party where everybody can get their groove on, laugh, take turns on the dance floor and not take themselves so seriously… And both Leo and Aquarius are real party animals.
Only one caution here: Neptune in an inconjunct to the Leo sun could mean you shouldn’t really count on alcohol or drugs to lighten the mood at this point. It also points to necessary adjustments in our Lion’s heart’s desires – being too egocentric could really backfire at this time. Take a plunge into higher love. Don’t get so engrossed in your enjoyment or your drama that you don’t notice your friend crying in the corner!
Put your love to the test…
The most important other aspect occurring at this blue moon is Saturn in Scorpio squaring both Venus and Jupiter. Saturn turns direct on August 2 which makes his influence all the more potent. The Jupiter Venus conjunction that was exact on July 1st has been sprinkling fairy dust on a lot of people… but before we got lost in the rose colored hues, taskmaster Saturn came to implement a little reality check on any newfound love, pleasure, or good fortune. And so he continues to do for the next weeks.
As mentioned above, love and relationship planet Venus will stay retrograde until early September, so the heat is on already anyway. Venus rules love and what we value, so there is extra cosmic pressure to define and stay true to our heart (core…) values. The retrograde period combined with the square from Saturn makes it imperative to face any issues head on, to behave as a responsible adult and NOT neglect red flags or duties.
So whatever love it is that you’ve discovered in July, if it’s worth it, take a structured approach to protect it, build it up and make it grow. Discipline and patience, I repeat, patience, are in order. The Aquarian influence suggests it would be good not to carve anything in stone just yet. Freedom – remember? Find structures that take into account your own unique needs, anything else won’t cut it in the long run. Dare to be that bird of paradise and let no external or internal pressure make you chicken out ;)
