New Moon July 2015
July’s new moon occurs in the early hours of July 16th at 23 degrees Cancer – in the Americas, already on the 15th. To be honest, this new moon looks a bit scary. The sun and moon, and several other planets form so-called stressful aspects to all the cosmic heavyweights, Saturn, Pluto, and Uranus. At the same time, there are some super fortunate aspects thrown in the mix for good fun: the Venus-Jupiter conjunction, and a supportive wide trine from Saturn to the new moon.
For some weeks, there has been a power struggle, or tug of war building up, between uber-planet Pluto sitting at 14 Capricorn, and a whole parade of personal planets in the opposite sign of Cancer. This roughly translates into a conflict of two opposing principles: mommy and daddy, caring vs. calculating, career vs. home, the power vs. the people. What makes the day of the new moon stand out is that it features the exact conjunction of Mars and Mercury, the warrior and the messenger, at 14 degrees of Cancer, exactly facing off with Pluto.
Why so Sirius?
A conjunction of Mars and Mercury fuses energy, aggression and action with fast thinking, contacting, communication. This could mean last-minute-decisions… sharp logic in the face of a hot issue… or heated arguments. In the worst case, Martian aggression and Mercurian detachment could play out as enjoying to hurt someone with your rapier wit… dominating with words. In the best, getting down to the chase and finally doing what you were talking about all those years, or telling someone what you’ve been wanting to say forever but lacked the courage... walking the talk, as they say.
Mars and Mercury are in exact alignment with an important fixed star, Sirius. Sirius is a huge red star in Canis Major, one of Orion’s hunting dogs. The character of Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series describes that star quite well: brave, loyal, but also brooding, impulsive, rebelling for the sake of it. Sirius was feared in antiquity for bringing the “dog days” of oppressive heat when the summer comes to a boil – in temperatures, and emotions. So watch out you don’t put on a Joker’s grin and start grilling someone with your words!
Pressure cookers at boiling point
Mars and Mercury together in water sign Cancer, on red hot Sirius, are a steaming hot combo, especially when fueled by Pluto’s pressure. On the political level, this particular constellation could mean a heated (propaganda) war for the homeland, between ethnic groups, or for the so-called family values. On a personal level, with that Pluto opposition, the “nuclear” family unit could literally blow up though! People might need to let off steam and get loud or even violent. There might be arguments full of subtle threats and emotional manipulation. And then, in watery cancer style, one might start to shout and the other start to cry… and the dream family disintegrates.
As cancer is a sign that rules the past, there could be old wounds and conflicts erupting again. You might feel you’re opposing a power you can’t defeat, or that standing up for yourself you might risk to lose all. Definitely be careful with words and actions today and for the next two weeks at least. Do not use underhand strategies or go against your conscience, especially with people in your family. When Pluto is involved, you have to dig deep and mobilize the resources of your heart and gut to withstand an almost unbearable situation. Bring love. Bring raw courage and go through whatever you’re facing. Because if you’re brave and you act from the heart, then this combination can mean a real breakthrough, a transformation of the way you think, act, and deal with power. The loyal side of Cancer combined with Sirius’ hunting dog instinct also could mean that you defend someone with a lot of heat – that you’re ready to take the heat for/from someone you love, too.
Twins and shadows
Actually, the thread of staying together and sticking together is highlighted by the new moon’s position in the constellation of the twins, exactly conjunct fixed star Pollux. In Roman mythology, Castor and Pollux were inseparable but also very different – one mortal, one immortal. When Castor died, Pollux chose to give up his own immortality. Zeus granted them to be together, spending one day in the underworld, and one with the gods in heaven. So this new moon points to a new beginning through sticking together under great pressure, and really making a sacrifice for someone you love. It might also mean that you need to look at your shadow (descend into the underworld) in order to get what you want and to clear the path. Very fitting to the Plutonic feel of this moon – Pluto being Lord of the Underworld… the place where you go to die or to transform into a hero who has faced his shadow.
Declaration of independence
Because this new moon forms a stressful aspect to Uranus, it might bring back memories of the upheaval of 2012-14, when the Pluto-Uranus square was creating the turmoil that’s still unfolding… protests and crackdowns, wars, economic crises, and the need for deep transformation on a personal level. The square to Uranus can point to sudden, unexpected, and sometimes jarring news and developments. Unforeseen changes in plans. Sudden demands. Accidents and too much nervous energy. At the same time, that nervous energy is like a wake up call, or the proverbial cold bucket. Well then, at least we’re awake!! Uranus is in Aries, sign of individuality and leadership. The new moon occurs in Cancer. So, someone in your family could suddenly need to assert their freedom. To want to do their own thing. Go it alone. Actually, that might as well be you! Prepare for the unexpected. Stay flexible. Don’t have too much coffee and cigarettes today, nor for that matter anything that contracts vessels and hightens tensions. Go easy on sweets and gluten too...
Lovers under Pressure
Next to Mars/Mercury and the moon in the Twins, there is yet another couple in the sky: Jupiter and Venus, the two lucky planets. They feel the heat, too… with a square from Saturn, but thankfully a supportive trine from Uranus as well. This means that your relationship is currently under the pressure for review, of how real that love actually is. At the same time, Uranus points to the possibility of finding completely new solutions for couples, with huge love (Jupiter/Venus in Leo) sustained by a free, unconventional and electrifying new way of relating! Nevertheless, this new stuff needs to work in real life – so we can nod our heads to Saturn in a grumpy mumbled “thank you”. Saturn square Jupiter/Venus still can feel very heavy though and you need to take care of your health, especially your circulation, and legs. Don’t eat too much sugar to cheer up, your teeth might fall out – I’m only half joking. Keep moving and don’t get rusty please, and don’t lose your faith in love…
Council of Elders
There are two aspects that might be just what we need to get through the next two weeks. One is a trine of the new moon to Chiron, the wounded healer, in Pisces; it promises that those old wounds will be opened to be healed. The other is the one to the demolition commando called “Saturn in Scorpio”. Damn, again that Plutonic theme! Saturn in Scorpio sometimes feels like an unbearable inner and outer pressure, but it serves to break down everything that’s not authentic anymore, just like Pluto does – the ruler of Scorpio. So, folks, the only security we have in these times is to abandon ourselves to demolish all that’s not true for us anymore. To stick to our loved ones even through the most hellish fights – if they’re worth it. If not, take the Uranus option out and do your own thaaaannng. The aspects to Chiron in Pisces and to Saturn in Scorpio also can mean to look for elders, or healers, to support that painful birth of a new self. It’s the time to have a coach or counsellor, actually it might be best to see a shaman – a real one, please. Or a good psychotherapist who is not just blabla. Or even better, a body therapist, because this change needs to involve all of you, and be more than just skin deep. It has to be in your blood and in your bones.
Happy new moon everyone!
